One of our brands of choice is Sassy. They make the most colorful toys that usually do more than one thing. They last forever, and I even wash them in the dishwasher so I know my son's toys are clean. I like the rattles that have a suction cup so that they are less likely to 'fall' to the floor. Dropping things is one of my son's favorite science experiments!
This rattle has a suction cup so it sticks to his walker and highchair, it plays music as it spins, and there are multiple colors and activities (spinning ball, divided colorful pieces that twirl). It is a favorite of everyone! Even other children who come over are attracted to his Ferris wheel rattle. (Sassy Fascination Station)
Another favorite brand is VTech. Children learn at a young age cause and effect with their toys. For example, a child learns that when he pushes Button A, then Button B opens up and shows a nice surprise.
Johnathon liked to stand up and push the buttons for an hour on his VTech Super Star Learning Table. He liked to turn the pages on the book. The book makes animal noises and says the name of the animal. He didn't quite have the knob turning skills he needed for a few of the toys, but that will come with practice. I like that it came with a cell phone that comes off the table. It is a bonus toy we can take with us on the go. We haven't had to take the legs off yet, but they come off easily for storing or travel.
We have dogs in our home. Luckily they are a bit too fast for Johnathon to catch. When we are not able to allow Johnathon to 'love the doggies' he loves on his Buddy. Buddy even naps with him!
When purchasing toys for a one year old remember that everything goes into their mouths. It is important to purchase stuffed animals that do not have removable parts such as button eyes or noses. That is why Taggies brand toys are so popular in our family. The company does not sew on buttons for eyes, they embroider the eyes so they cannot come off. Another advantage that this momma likes is that I can throw Buddy in the washing machine and dryer and he comes out looking brand new each time!
Besides typical toys, books are an important part of learning. We received three board books from one of my professors as a baby shower gift. Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See by Eric Carle is Johnathon's favorite. As I read to him, I make the noise that the animal on each page makes. He laughs and he copies me. This is an easy way to introduce your child to animal sounds.
A favorite close second is There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. I sing this book to him as I read it. There is a hole in the center where the reader sees all the animals that the old lady ate. It is a whimsical retelling of the original story, and it was one of my favorite songs as a child.
Not everything has to be store bought. Material books are easy to make. Check out this adorable book made by Marinelli. Below is a sample page from her book.
I like to find ideas for my son through Mommy groups on Facebook. Many times other mothers are selling their baby's toys that they have outgrown or offering advice on items they have purchased. Mommies can ask questions and offer advice. It is a great way to make new friends with children your age as well. I joined a few play dates from meeting others on Mommy sites.
What are some of your baby's favorite toys? Do you play with the toys too? Have you made any toys or are your child's toys all store bought? Do you ask others what toys worked best for their family or do you just purchase things you love when you see them?

Oriya Organics is introducing a new product that launches at Expo West on March 9th.
We were lucky enough to get a sample so we could tell our readers all about the product. PLUS, as an added bonus I've included a YUMMY recipe for a Chocolate Peanut Butter mug cake. It is chock full of protein and it is SUPER easy to make!
First, Let me tell you about Oriya Organics' Gather
Yummy Chocolate Peanut Butter Mug Cake
- I waited about five minutes to eat my peanut butter cake so it could cool down.
- Add coconut cream whipped topping on top of your cake for a yummy addition.
- Sprinkle coconut flakes on the top for a more coconutty flavor.
- You can make the cake with creamy peanut butter if you do not like peanuts in cake.
- Don't like chocolate? Just don't add the cocoa powder but make the cake the same way.
