We went to the La Brea Tarpits when my son was in kindergarten. It was quite interesting to view the pits as an adult since the lat time I went I was a child myself. It just so happened the day we were there, the scientists were casting bones they found in the tar. She explained the procedure of how she carefully remove fossils from the tar, casts it (just like doctors cast a broken leg), and uses the cast to recreate the bone. I found it very interesting that they allow teens 16 and older to volunteer for such a prestigious position. Watch this video that shows how scientists guess awooly mammoth's age with special guest Will Ferril. You will love it!
