Heart of a Philanthropist's Take
We learn at the very onset of the story that Jake's family all have superpowers... (or do they really)? Josh wanted to have super abilities like the rest of his family, but didn't seem to have any. That is until the bird feces landed on him. Of course, he couldn't fly because that would just be ridiculous right? (smile), But he could now throw rocks at lightning speed.
Another interesting animal that comes into the story is a raccoon thief. He steals from the family. The kids decide to start a Gumshoe Crew to catch the thief and deliver the stolen goods back to the original owners. This leads to quite hilarious scenes.
What a cute story! I liked that there is no cussing, no shapeshifting, no evil (except for the thieving raccoon), and nothing I have to worry about explaining to my son. There is a bit of mystery and a lot of humor in Josh and the Gumshoe Crew. The author gave everyone and every place adorable names such as Boring Brook. Kids and adults will enjoy this story. I look forward to reading other books by Melissa Perry Moraja.
Summary: Up until a few days ago, nothing extraordinary had ever happened in ten year old Josh Wunderkind’s life - except eating a whole pot of pasta by himself. But that all changed after a mammoth-sized bird hit him smack on the face with a glob of neon green bird poop, triggering his superhuman Wunderkind ability and leaving him with the responsibility of caring for a baby bird he named Max. Now Josh was just like his older brother and twin sister Madison-super extraordinary! But what Josh didn't realize was that being superhuman wasn't all fun and games. And things only got more complex in Josh’s life when his two siblings and a couple neighborhood friends persuade him to lead a super crime-solving, neighborhood news team—the Gumshoe News Crew. But not before they agree on the Super Secret and complete Gumshoe Boot Camp. Find out what the Super Secret is. Will the Gumshoe News Crew complete boot camp? Or will Josh let his team down?
