I began a 30 Day Experiment based on the book Get Your Family Eating Right! A 30-Day Plan for Teaching Your Kids Healthy Eating Habits for Life, Authors Lynn Fredericks Founder of FamilyCook Productions and Mercedes Sanchez, M.S., R.D. and Director of Nourishment Education for FamilyCook Productions last month.
I have been learning a bit more about my food since starting the 30 Day Experiment. I have to say, some of what I have learned is very disturbing. The longer I worked with the 'experiment,' the more it became a lifestyle change for my family. Due to some circumstances beyond my control, I had to take a bit of a sabbatical from the 'experiment.' Well, I am back now. I'd like to share a little bit about what I learned while I was gone.
Did you know that pigs on farms (not all farms but many) are raised in boxes only a few inches larger than they are? There is no room for them to move, to turn, to stretch... This is not natural for pigs. Their natural instinct is to dig in the dirt for food. They like to lay in mud because pigs don't have sweat glands and that is how they cool down.
Did you know that pigs have a high IQ? According to Global Action Network, " Pigs have an I.Q higher than dogs and are considered by animal experts to be more trainable than dogs or cats."
I understand that most pigs are food and not pets, but it seems inhumane to me to lock them up in a box. Would you want to live in a box that is just a bit bigger than you? If you agree that this is inhumane, please click the graphic and sign the pledge asking for better conditions for pigs.
