From the book, “Nobody loves me. Everybody hates me. I'm gonna go eat worms.” While Tyler knew he wouldn't really eat worms, he did not feel loved. His parents sent him to live with his grandmother when they separated. Was he angry? You bet. Was he confused? Absolutely. Where did he fit in? He didn't know any more. After an argument with his grandmother, Tyler decided to run away. “I'll show them I can take care of myself.” Tyler Andrews doesn't need anyone!"
Of Feathers and Friends by Darlene Hoggard Davis just arrived in the mail. I picked it up to see what it was about and realized that many kids could relate to the story line. Tyler's parents are heading for divorce so they send Tyler to live with his grandmother. At the beginning he speaks harshly to his grandma. She sends him to his room and says when she gets back that they will talk. Tyler decides enough is enough and chooses to run away. I don't want to tell you anything else because I want you to read it for yourself. The story is written for kids who are old enough to read a longer book than 32 pages, one who is just beginning chapter books. It is just under 120 pages. I suggest reading it wth your child, and then getting their opinion of the book. Send me your reviews and comments. Who knows, you may just get published on HoaP!
